Jesus shows us that loving Him means obeying Him, and He promises that we are never alone because the Holy Spirit is always with us to help and guide us. Core Teaching Theme: In this passage, Jesus teaches His disciples that love for Him is shown through obedience. He promises that even though He will not always be with them physically, God will send the Holy Spirit to be their Helper. This lesson helps children understand that following Jesus is about more than words—it’s about actions. It also reassures them that they are never alone, because the Holy Spirit is always with them to guide, comfort, and help them make good choices. LEADER PREP
Leader Devotional & Invitation (for you, before teaching) In John 14:15–21, Jesus gives a powerful and comforting message: loving Him is not just about what we say—it’s about how we live. He connects love and obedience, showing that following Him means choosing His way in our everyday actions. But Jesus doesn’t stop there—He also promises something incredible. He tells His disciples they will not be left alone. God will send the Holy Spirit, a Helper who will be with them forever.
As you reflect on this passage, consider your own walk with Jesus. What does it look like for you to “love Jesus” in your daily life? Are there areas where God is inviting you to trust Him more through obedience? This isn’t about perfection—it’s about relationship. Jesus isn’t asking for flawless behavior; He’s inviting us into a life where we listen, follow, and grow closer to Him.
The promise of the Holy Spirit is deeply personal. You are not alone in your role as a teacher, a leader, or even in your own life. The same Helper Jesus promised His disciples is with you today—guiding your words, giving you patience, and helping you love these children well. When you feel unsure or unprepared, remember that you are not doing this on your own.
As you step into this lesson, see it as more than just teaching—it’s planting seeds. You are helping children understand that Jesus loves them, calls them to follow Him, and never leaves them alone. Your faithfulness, even in small moments, can make a lasting impact. Trust that God is working through you. Leader Prayer Lord, thank You for loving me and for sending the Holy Spirit to guide and help me. As I teach today, help me to show Your love through my words and actions. Give me patience, clarity, and joy as I lead these children. Help them understand that they are never alone and that following You is the best way to live. Amen.
Bible Background (Understanding the Story)
This passage takes place during a very important moment in Jesus’ life. He is speaking to His disciples during what is often called the “Last Supper,” the night before He is arrested. Jesus knows that He will soon leave them, and His friends are confused and worried. He is preparing them for what is coming.
In these verses, Jesus explains that loving Him means obeying His teachings. But He also comforts them with a promise: they will not be left alone. God will send the Holy Spirit to be their Helper—someone who will guide them, remind them of Jesus’ teachings, and stay with them forever. This was a new and powerful promise for the disciples.
The key message for children is simple but important: following Jesus means living the way He teaches us, and we are never alone when we do it. The Holy Spirit is always with us—helping us make good choices, reminding us of what is right, and comforting us when we need it.

Welcome Question (displayed): How do you show someone that you love them?
Write the welcome question where kids can easily see it (board, paper, or screen).
Before Kids Arrive
Have a simple open space for a quick movement activity. Think of 1–2 personal examples of showing love through actions (helping, listening, obeying). Prayer Over the Space (Pray quietly before kids arrive): God, thank You for each child who will walk into this room today. Help them feel loved, safe, and welcomed. Open their hearts to understand what it means to love You and follow You. Fill this space with Your peace and Your Spirit. Amen.
Leader Tip
Younger kids (K–2) will give simple, concrete answers like “hugging” or “sharing,” while older kids (3–5) may begin to understand deeper ideas like listening, helping, or obeying. Affirm all responses and gently guide them toward action-based love.
As Kids Arrive (Leader Script)
“Hey everyone! I’m so glad you’re here today! Come on in and find a spot. I’ve got a question for you to think about.”
(Point to the question)
“How do you show someone that you love them?”
(Allow responses)
“That’s awesome! What are some ways you show love at home?” “Have you ever helped someone to show you care?” “What about listening or doing what someone asks—does that show love too?”
“You guys are already thinking about something really important today!”
At Start Time (Leader Script)
“Alright friends, let’s come together!”
(Pause and gather attention)
“Have you ever said, ‘I love you’ to someone? Maybe your mom, dad, grandparent, or a friend?”
(Pause for responses)
“That feels really good to say, doesn’t it? But did you know… love isn’t just something we say—it’s something we show?”
“Today, we’re going to learn that loving Jesus isn’t just about saying it—it’s about how we live and the choices we make. And the best part? We’re not alone—God gives us a Helper to be with us every day!” Curiosity Activity – Game or Object Lesson: “Show It, Don’t Say It!”
Leader Instruction
This activity helps children understand that love is shown through actions, not just words. It prepares them to connect obedience and actions with loving Jesus.
Step-by-Step:
- Tell the group: “We’re going to play a quick game called Show It, Don’t Say It!”
- Call on one child at a time (or small groups).
Giving a hug
- Whisper or tell them an action to act out silently (examples below):
Helping clean up toys Sharing food Listening to a parent Helping a friend who is sad
- The rest of the group guesses what action they are showing.
- After each round, ask: “Does that show love? How?”
- Play 3–4 quick rounds.
Keep actions simple and quick to maintain attention. Leader Tips for Management: Encourage shy children by letting them act with a partner. Affirm every guess and keep the energy positive and encouraging.
Transition (Leader Script)
“Those were some great ways to show love! You didn’t even have to say a word—we could see it!”
“Today in our Bible story, Jesus teaches us something really important—if we love Him, we show it by what we do. And He promises to send us a Helper to be with us every step of the way.”
“Let’s find out more about that together!”
Belief – Hear God's Word
Leader Instruction
This is the moment where children hear and experience God’s Word. Focus on helping them understand that loving Jesus means following Him and that He promises we are never alone. Keep your tone calm and inviting, and allow space for pauses and simple participation.
Speak slowly and clearly, using natural pauses for reflection Teaching Tips: Encourage children to participate with simple motions and responses Emphasize key words like love, obey, and Helper Keep the story grounded in the Scripture—don’t add extra details Make eye contact and invite children into the moment Prayer of Invitation (Leader Script): “Dear God, thank You for Your Word. Help us to listen, learn, and understand what You want to teach us today. Open our hearts to love You and follow You. Amen.” Bible Time Rhyme (say with motions): “Open up the Bible wide (open hands like a book) God’s Word is our guide inside (point to heart) Listen close and hear Him speak (cup hands to ears)” Storytelling (Leader Script): “Jesus said, ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments.’ (Pause)
That means… if we love Jesus, we don’t just say it—we show it by doing what He says.
(Ask) Have you ever said you love someone? (Pause for responses)
Jesus wants our love to be shown in how we live.
Then Jesus made a promise. He said, ‘I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper… to be with you forever.’
(Place hand over heart)
This Helper is the Holy Spirit—God’s Spirit—who is always with us.
Jesus said the world may not see Him, but His followers would know Him… because He would be with them.
(Pause)
He said, ‘I will not leave you alone.’
(Invite children to hug themselves)
Think about that… Jesus promises we are never alone.
(Ask) How does it feel to know you are never alone? (Pause for responses)
Jesus also said that when we love Him and follow Him, we belong to Him—and He is with us.
(Stand tall and smile)
So when we choose to obey Jesus, we are showing our love… and the Holy Spirit helps us every step of the way.”
Ask children to place their hand on their heart when hearing “Helper”
Engagement Tips: Invite them to whisper, “I’m not alone” together Have them hug themselves when hearing “I will not leave you alone” Let them repeat: “Love Jesus, follow Jesus!” Connecting the Wonder Truth (Leader Script): “Today we learned that loving Jesus means following Him. And when we do, He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us and be with us forever.
Let’s say this together: ‘I love Jesus, I follow Jesus, and I am never alone!’” Word of Wonder (Memory Verse): “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” — John 14:16 “I will ask the Father” (point upward) Motions: “give you another Helper” (reach out hands like receiving a gift) “to be with you” (place hand on heart) “forever” (stretch arms wide)
Whisper the verse together Practice: Say it normally Say it with confidence and motions Optional Engagement Game: “Helper Tag” (Simple Version): Have one child be the “Helper.” When another child is gently tagged, the Helper comes alongside them and walks with them for a few seconds.
Afterward, explain: “Just like the Helper stayed with their friend, the Holy Spirit stays with us—always!”
Faith – Practice the truth
Leader Instruction
This time helps children connect the Bible story to their everyday lives. Remind them that following Jesus and trusting the Holy Spirit is something we practice little by little—not something we have to get perfect right away.
Encourage every child to share, but never force participation. Some children may want to talk, while others may prefer to listen. Affirm every response with kindness and curiosity.
Affirm every answer: “That’s a great thought!” or “I’m glad you shared that.” Tips for Volunteers: Keep answers simple and age-appropriate—don’t over-explain. Give children time to think before answering. Share a simple example from your own life if helpful.

(Remind leaders: There are no wrong answers—this is about honest thinking and growing faith.) Faith Practice Moment (Optional but Encouraged) Leader Script: “Let’s take a quiet moment to talk to God together. Put your hands over your heart or hold your hands open in your lap.”
(Leader pauses briefly)
“Repeat after me:” “Jesus, I love You.”
“Help me follow You.” “Holy Spirit, guide me.” “Thank You for being with me.”
“Amen.”
Transition (Leader Script)
“Following Jesus and trusting the Holy Spirit is something we practice every day. We won’t always get it perfect—but God is always with us, helping us grow. Now let’s think about what that means for who we are and how God sees us.”
Identity – Activity and response
Craft Activity – “God Is With Me Always” Reminder Card Supplies: (Index cards or small pieces of paper) (Crayons or markers) (Stickers – optional)
Leader Instruction
This activity helps children understand that their identity in Christ means they are never alone—God’s Holy Spirit is always with them. As they create their reminder card, they will connect the promise Jesus made in this passage to their own lives. This reinforces that being a follower of Jesus isn’t just about what we do, but also about who we are—children of God who are loved, guided, and never left alone.
Encourage the children to think about times when they might feel alone, scared, or unsure. Then remind them that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would always be with them. This card becomes something they can take home and keep as a visual reminder of that truth. The goal is for them to leave with a clear understanding: “Because I follow Jesus, God is always with me.”
Younger Kids (K–2): Have children draw a picture of themselves with a heart, a cross, or a light around them. At the top, help them write: “God is with me!” Encourage bright colors and simple symbols that remind them of Jesus’ love.
Older Kids (3–5): Have children write the phrase: “The Holy Spirit is with me always.” Then ask them to write or draw one way the Holy Spirit helps them (examples: “helps me be kind,” “helps me make good choices,” “helps me not be afraid”).
Pass out supplies before giving instructions to minimize distractions Classroom Management Tips: Keep the activity moving by giving a 2-minute and 1-minute time reminder Walk around and encourage participation, especially helping younger children with writing Instructions:
- Give each child an index card or paper.
- Ask them to write (or help them write) “God is with me!” or the provided phrase.
- Have them draw a picture or write their response based on their age group.
- Allow them to decorate with colors or stickers.
- Invite a few children to share their card (optional).
- Encourage them to take the card home and keep it somewhere they will see it.
Leader Script (Identity Connection): “Today we learned that when we love Jesus, we follow Him—and He gives us the Holy Spirit to be with us forever. That means you are never alone. Not at school, not at home, not even when you feel scared. Your identity as a child of God means His Spirit is always with you, helping you, guiding you, and loving you. Every time you look at your card, remember: God is with you always.”
Closing – Send them with the truth
Review the Wonder Truth When we love Jesus, we follow Him, and He sends the Holy Spirit to be with us forever.
