Scripture: Matthew 15:21–28

Wonder Truth Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith.

Word of Wonder (Memory Verse) > "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." > — Matthew 15:28a (NIV)

Lesson Big Idea Sometimes we may feel forgotten, left out, or think God is not listening. The Canaanite woman trusted Jesus even when the answer did not come right away. Her faith and persistence pleased Jesus, and He answered her prayer. We can trust that Jesus hears us, loves us, and invites everyone to come to Him in faith.

Core Teaching Theme In this lesson, children will discover that Jesus cares about every person, no matter where they come from or what others think about them. Through the story of the Canaanite woman, they will learn that faith means trusting Jesus even when answers seem delayed. Jesus honored her persistent faith and showed that God's love and mercy are for all people. Children will be encouraged to keep praying, keep trusting, and remember that Jesus always hears those who come to Him with sincere faith.

Key Vocabulary

Lesson Length Approximately 30 minutes

Suggested Time Breakdown: – Leader Preparation & Introduction – 3 minutes – Curiosity Activity – 5 minutes – Bible Story & Belief – 8 minutes – Faith Application – 6 minutes – Identity Activity – 5 minutes – Closing Prayer & Memory Verse Review – 3 minutes

SECTION 1 – LEADER PREP

Leader Devotional & Invitation (for you, before teaching)

The story of the Canaanite woman reminds us that faith is not measured by where we come from, what others think of us, or how quickly our prayers are answered. This woman was considered an outsider, yet she approached Jesus with humility, courage, and unwavering trust. Even when His response seemed delayed, she refused to give up because she believed Jesus was compassionate and able to help. Her faith became an example that has encouraged believers for generations.

Many of us have experienced moments when it feels like God is silent. We pray for healing, guidance, or help, and the answer does not come as quickly as we hoped. This passage gently reminds us that God's silence is never the same as God's absence. Jesus was fully aware of the woman's need, and through their conversation He revealed both the depth of her faith and the wideness of God's mercy. Sometimes God uses waiting to deepen our trust in Him.

As you prepare to teach, think about the children in your classroom. Some may feel left out at school, struggle to make friends, or wonder if God really hears their prayers. Others may be praying for someone they love who is sick or facing difficult situations at home. Today you have the opportunity to remind every child that Jesus welcomes anyone who comes to Him with faith. No child is too young, too small, or too unimportant for Jesus to notice.

Ask God to help you teach with kindness, patience, and confidence. Your encouragement may become the very reminder a child needs to keep trusting Jesus. The seeds of faith planted today can grow into a lifetime of trusting God's love, even during difficult seasons.

Leader Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for showing that Your love is for everyone who comes to You in faith. Help me teach this lesson with compassion, wisdom, and joy. Give me the right words to encourage each child to trust You, even when answers seem delayed. May every child leave today knowing that Jesus hears their prayers, loves them deeply, and welcomes them into His family. Use me to point them toward You in everything I say and do.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible Background (Understanding the Story)

This story takes place as Jesus traveled into the region of Tyre and Sidon, an area outside the land where most Jewish people lived. A Canaanite woman approached Jesus because her daughter was suffering terribly. Although she was not part of the Jewish community, she believed Jesus had the power to heal her child. She continued asking for His help with humility and determination, refusing to give up.

At first, Jesus did not answer her request in the way people expected. His conversation with the woman revealed the strength of her faith and trust. In the end, Jesus praised her by saying she had "great faith" and immediately healed her daughter. This powerful moment showed that God's love, mercy, and salvation are offered to everyone who comes to Him with genuine faith.

The most important truth for children to understand is that Jesus listens to every person who comes to Him. Even when answers do not come right away, we can continue praying, trusting, and believing that Jesus knows what we need and cares deeply for us.

Prep Time

Estimated Preparation Time: 15–20 minutes

Before class, read Matthew 15:21–28 several times, gather the lesson supplies, review the activity instructions, prepare the memory verse cards, and pray for the children who will be attending. A brief review of the lesson flow beforehand will help the session move smoothly and confidently within the 30-minute timeframe.

SECTION 2 – CURIOSITY (5 minutes)

Welcome Question (displayed): Have you ever had to wait for someone to notice you or help you? How did that make you feel?

—

Before Kids Arrive

Place chairs in a circle or semi-circle where everyone can easily see one another. Have one small, soft object ready (such as a beanbag, small stuffed animal, or foam ball) for the opening activity. Display the Welcome Question where children can read it as they arrive.

—

Prayer Over the Space (Pray quietly before kids arrive): "Jesus, thank You for every child who will walk into this room today. Help each one feel welcomed, loved, and important. Open their hearts to trust You and remind them that You always hear those who come to You with faith. Help me show Your kindness through my words and actions today. Amen."

—

Leader Tip

K–2: Younger children often relate through feelings and personal experiences. Ask simple questions about times they felt included or left out.

Grades 3–5: Older children may begin talking about fairness, friendships, or unanswered prayers. Allow them to share while gently guiding the conversation back to trusting Jesus.

—

As Kids Arrive (Leader Script)

"Hi, everyone! I'm so glad you're here today! Before we get started, think about our question on the screen:

'Have you ever had to wait for someone to notice you or help you? How did that make you feel?'

There are no wrong answers. We'd love to hear what you think!"

If children need encouragement, ask:

– "Have you ever waited for your turn?" – "Have you ever wanted someone to listen to you?" – "How does it feel when someone finally notices you?" – "What makes you feel welcomed?"

Respond positively to every answer and thank each child for sharing.

—

At Start Time (Leader Script)

"Let's all find a seat together!

Sometimes we feel forgotten, left out, or wonder if anyone is listening to us. Maybe you've raised your hand in class, waited for a parent to answer, or wanted a friend to notice you.

Today's Bible story is about a woman who kept believing that Jesus cared about her, even when it seemed like she might not receive an answer right away. She didn't give up because she trusted Jesus. We're going to discover that Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith."

Curiosity Activity – Game or Object Lesson

Activity Title: Keep Passing the Hope

Leader Instruction

This simple game helps children experience patiently waiting without giving up. It introduces the lesson that sometimes answers take time, but we can continue trusting Jesus. The focus is not on winning but on learning persistence.

—

Step-by-Step:

  1. Have everyone stand or sit in a circle.
  2. Give one child the soft object.
  3. Explain that everyone will gently pass the object around the circle while soft music plays or while the leader counts aloud.
  4. Randomly pause the music or stop counting.
  5. Whoever is holding the object shares one thing they hope or pray for (examples: helping a friend, healing someone who is sick, courage at school, a family member, etc.). If they prefer not to share, they may simply say, "Jesus hears me."
  6. Continue for several rounds so multiple children have an opportunity to participate.
  7. Finish by reminding everyone that every prayer matters to Jesus, even when the answer doesn't come immediately.

—

Leader Tips for Management:

– Encourage children to pass gently and avoid throwing the object. – Allow children to pass if they feel shy about sharing; never force participation. – Keep the pace moving so several children have an opportunity before time is up.

—

Transition (Leader Script)

"Great job! Sometimes we have to wait patiently, and sometimes we keep praying even when we don't see the answer right away. In today's Bible story, we're going to meet a woman who did exactly that. She trusted Jesus, kept believing, and discovered that Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith. Let's open God's Word and see what happened."

SECTION 3 – BELIEF (10 minutes)

Leader Instruction

This is the most important part of today's lesson because children will hear God's Word and discover what it teaches about Jesus. Read slowly, allow children to imagine the scene, and encourage them to participate with simple movements and responses. Help children understand that Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith.

Teaching Tips for Volunteers: – Read with warmth and expression rather than rushing. – Pause after important moments to let children think. – Encourage every child to participate without forcing anyone. – Keep bringing attention back to Jesus and His love. – Remind children that asking questions is okay.

—

Prayer of Invitation (Leader Script):

"Dear Jesus, thank You for giving us Your Word. Please help us listen carefully today. Open our hearts to understand how much You love us and help us trust You with great faith. Amen."

—

Bible Time Rhyme (say with motions):

Leader and Children:

"Open God's Word, open it wide, (Open hands like a book.)

Jesus will be our faithful guide! (Point upward, then place hands over heart.)

Listen, learn, and grow today! (Cup hand to ear, then stretch both hands upward.)

—

Storytelling (Leader Script):

(Hold a simple stuffed animal or doll to represent the little girl.)

Today we're going to hear about a woman who loved her daughter very much.

One day, Jesus traveled to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

(Take a few slow walking steps in place.)

A Canaanite woman came to Him. She called out because her daughter was suffering badly.

(Hold the stuffed animal close and look concerned.)

She wanted Jesus to help.

Jesus did not answer her right away.

(Pause quietly for a few seconds.)

Have you ever had to wait for something important?

(Allow children to answer briefly.)

The woman did not give up.

She kept asking Jesus for help because she believed He could heal her daughter.

(Fold hands as if praying.)

Some of Jesus' disciples wanted to send her away because she kept calling out.

But the woman stayed close to Jesus.

She knelt before Him.

(Invite children to kneel or bow their heads for a moment if able.)

She said,

"Lord, help me!"

Can everyone say that together?

Children: "Lord, help me!"

Jesus spoke with her, and the woman continued to trust Him.

She did not stop believing.

She knew Jesus was full of mercy.

(Place one hand over your heart.)

Then Jesus said,

"Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted."

At that very moment, her daughter was healed.

(Smile and gently lift the stuffed animal as if celebrating.)

What do you think helped the woman keep trusting Jesus?

(Pause for responses.)

What can we do when we have to wait for God's answer?

(Allow a few responses.)

This woman showed us what faith looks like.

She trusted Jesus, she kept coming to Him, and Jesus honored her faith.

—

Engagement Tips:

– Invite children to repeat: "Lord, help me!" – Ask everyone to place a hand over their heart whenever the word faith is spoken. – Have children quietly kneel for a moment when the woman kneels before Jesus. – Repeat together throughout the story: "Keep trusting Jesus!"

—

Connecting the Wonder Truth (Leader Script):

The Canaanite woman came to Jesus because she believed He could help. Even when she had to wait, she kept trusting Him. Jesus welcomed her faith and answered her prayer. We can come to Jesus too. He hears us, loves us, and invites everyone to trust Him.

Repeat Together:

Leader: "Who does Jesus welcome?"

Children: "Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith!"

—

Word of Wonder (Memory Verse):

> "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." > — Matthew 15:28a (NIV)

Motions: – "Woman" — Extend one hand outward. – "You have great faith!" — Place both hands over your heart, then lift them upward. – "Your request is granted." — Stretch both hands forward as if giving a wonderful gift.

Practice:

  1. Whisper the verse together.
  2. Say it together with normal voices.
  3. Say it loudly with confidence while doing all the motions.

—

Optional Engagement Game:

Keep Trusting Relay

Choose one child at a time to walk slowly across the room while carrying the stuffed animal (or another soft object). As they walk, everyone else quietly repeats,

"Keep trusting Jesus."

When the child reaches the other side, everyone says together:

"Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith!"

Repeat with several volunteers until everyone who wants a turn has participated. End by reciting the memory verse together one final time with motions.

SECTION 4 – FAITH

Leader Instruction

This discussion helps children connect the Bible story to their own lives. Today's story reminds us that Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with faith. The Canaanite woman trusted Jesus even when the answer didn't come immediately. Children will discover that they can also keep trusting Jesus when they are waiting, worried, or unsure.

Encourage every child to participate, but never pressure anyone to speak. Celebrate each response with kindness and curiosity. The goal is to help children practice trusting Jesus, not to find perfect answers.

Volunteer Tips: – Thank every child for sharing, even if their answer is different from others. – Give children plenty of time to think before answering. – If a child shares something personal, listen with care and avoid trying to "fix" the situation immediately. – Remind children that Jesus hears every prayer and loves every person.

—

Discussion (Leader Script)

  1. How can waiting for an answer from God affect the way we feel? What helps us keep trusting during those times?
  1. What does this story teach us about how Jesus sees people who feel left out or forgotten?
  1. Think about something happening in your life this week. What would trusting Jesus look like in that situation?

Leader Reminder: There are no wrong answers. Encourage children to listen respectfully to one another and remember that everyone is learning to trust God more each day.

—

Faith Practice Moment (Optional but Encouraged)

Leader Script:

"Let's practice trusting Jesus together. Everyone place one hand over your heart. Now slowly turn your other hand upward like you're giving your worries to Jesus."

Leader: "Jesus, I trust You."

Children repeat: "Jesus, I trust You."

Leader: "You always hear me."

Children repeat: "You always hear me."

Children repeat: "Help me keep believing."

"Now let's take one slow, deep breath together. Remember that whenever you feel worried, left out, or unsure, you can always come to Jesus because He welcomes everyone who trusts Him."

—

Transition (Leader Script)

"Today we learned that trusting Jesus isn't something we do just once—it's something we practice every day. Just like the woman in our Bible story, we can keep coming to Jesus with faith because He loves us and hears us. Next, let's discover what this story teaches us about who we are because we belong to Jesus." IDENTITY (5 minutes)

Craft Activity – Jesus Knows My Name Heart

Supplies: – One heart-shaped or circle-shaped piece of construction paper (one per child) – Crayons or markers – Small stickers (optional) – Hole punch and yarn (optional for hanging)

Leader Instruction

Children sometimes wonder if they are important or if God notices them. In today's Bible story, the Canaanite woman may have felt like an outsider, but she trusted Jesus anyway. Jesus saw her faith, cared about her, and answered her request. This reminds us that Jesus knows each of us personally and welcomes everyone who comes to Him.

During this activity, each child will create a simple heart reminder showing that they belong to Jesus and are loved by Him. As they decorate their hearts, remind them that their value does not come from what others think about them—it comes from being loved by God. Every child is invited to come to Jesus with faith because He knows their name, hears their prayers, and loves them deeply.

Younger Kids (K–2): Have children write (or help them write) their name in large letters in the center of the heart. Around their name, they can draw hearts, smiling faces, crosses, praying hands, or pictures of themselves talking to Jesus. Encourage them to decorate their heart with bright colors and stickers.

Older Kids (3–5): Have students write their name in the center of the heart. Around the outside, ask them to write or draw three short responses:

– Jesus welcomes me. – I can trust Jesus when I pray. – One prayer I want to keep bringing to Jesus is: __________.

Encourage them to take the heart home and place it somewhere they will see it this week.

Classroom Management Tips: – Keep markers and stickers in the center of each table to reduce passing supplies. – Walk around and encourage every child by using their name as they work. – Finish by inviting everyone to hold up their heart together before the closing script.

Instructions:

  1. Give each child one paper heart (or circle) and coloring supplies.
  2. Ask everyone to write their name in the center of the heart.
  3. Explain that their name reminds them that Jesus knows them personally.
  4. Allow children to decorate their heart while discussing today's story.
  5. Invite older children to complete the reflection statements.
  6. Ask everyone to hold up their finished hearts.
  7. End by reading the memory verse together and reminding children to take their heart home as a reminder that Jesus welcomes them.

Leader Script (Identity Connection): "Today we learned that Jesus welcomed the Canaanite woman because she came to Him with faith. Jesus didn't ignore her—He saw her, heard her, and loved her. The same is true for you. Jesus knows your name. He hears your prayers. He welcomes you every time you come to Him. You never have to wonder if you belong with Jesus because His love is for everyone who trusts Him. When you look at your heart this week, remember: 'Jesus knows me, loves me, and welcomes me.'"
