“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” — John 4:13–14

SECTION 1 – LEADER PREP

Leader Devotional & Invitation (for you, before teaching) Jesus is tired and thirsty when He stops at a well in a place called Samaria. He meets a woman there—someone many people would have ignored or avoided. But Jesus does not avoid her. He starts a conversation. He asks for a drink. And little by little, Jesus opens a doorway to something much deeper than water: He offers her living water—life with God that fills the thirsty places inside us. This is one of the most tender parts of the Gospel. The woman has questions, confusion, and a complicated story. Jesus doesn’t shame her. He doesn’t push her away. He tells the truth with kindness, and He invites her into worship and belonging. Jesus reveals that God is not only for “certain people.” God’s love crosses borders. God sees people others overlook. Jesus meets her right where she is—and He gives her hope. Children understand thirst. They know what it feels like to really want something: attention, friendship, comfort, safety, to be included. Today you are not teaching kids to “try harder.” You are helping them hear that Jesus is the One who satisfies our hearts. He is the One who gives lasting joy and love. He is the Savior who meets people kindly and invites them close. As you prepare, reflect quietly: Where do I feel “thirsty” inside—tired, worried, unseen, or needing encouragement? Do I believe Jesus meets me with kindness and offers what I truly need? You are creating space for children to hear good news: Jesus sees them. Jesus welcomes them. Jesus gives life that lasts.

Prayer for Leaders

Jesus, thank You for meeting us with kindness. Give me clarity as I teach, compassion for every child, and faithfulness to share Your truth gently. Help these children feel seen, safe, and loved today. Amen.

Bible Background for Leaders

WHO: Jesus; the Samaritan woman; the disciples; people from the town WHAT: Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman and offers “living water”; many believe in Him WHERE: Samaria, at Jacob’s well near the town of Sychar WHEN: Early in Jesus’ ministry, traveling between regions WHY: To reveal that Jesus is the Savior for all people and that true life is found in Him CONNECTION: Jesus brings God’s love to people others overlook—He satisfies our deepest needs and invites us into true worship and faith. Volunteer Connection Tip Keep the focus on Jesus’ kindness and welcome, not the woman’s past details.

Explain “living water” simply: “Jesus gives us life with God that fills our hearts.”

Avoid adult-level discussion of the woman’s history—say “Her life was complicated, and Jesus still loved her.”

Emphasize that Jesus offers love to everyone—no one is left out.

Model gentle curiosity: “I wonder how she felt when Jesus talked to her?”

Supply Checklist

Bible

Cup and a pitcher/bottle of water (or two clear cups)

Paper and crayons/markers

Optional: blue paper drops (pre-cut) or sticky notes shaped like drops/hearts

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Curiosity – 5 minutes | Get them wondering

Leader Instruction

This section prepares children’s hearts to receive the story. The goal is to spark curiosity, connect to real-life “thirst,” and introduce the theme that Jesus meets us kindly and offers what we truly need. Kids understand thirst and wanting. Use that to gently help them see: We can feel thirsty in our bodies (water) and in our hearts (love, comfort, belonging). Jesus notices people and speaks with kindness. Jesus offers “living water,” meaning life with God that satisfies our hearts.

Keep it warm, safe, and interactive. Welcome Question (displayed): “What is something you really need when you feel tired, sad, or left out?”

Before Kids Arrive

Write the Welcome Question clearly where children can see it.

Place paper and crayons on tables.

Set a cup and a pitcher/bottle of water where kids can see (do not serve yet unless you have a plan).

Pray quietly over the room

“Jesus, thank You for seeing us and loving us. Help these children know You give what their hearts need today. Amen.”

As Kids Arrive (Leader Script)

Greet each child by name. “Hi, [child’s name]! I’m so glad you’re here today!” Point to the question. “When you feel tired, sad, or left out… what do you need most?” If they hesitate, prompt gently: “Do you need a hug?”

“Do you need a friend to play with?”

“Do you need someone to listen?”

“Do you need a drink of water or a snack?”

Affirm their sharing: “That makes sense.”

“Thank you for telling me.”

“It’s okay to need help.”

At Start Time (Leader Script)

“Friends, let’s come together in our circle.” Pause until attention settles. “Thank you for thinking about our question. We all get thirsty—our bodies get thirsty for water, and sometimes our hearts feel thirsty too.” (Place a hand over your heart.) “Today’s Bible story is about Jesus meeting a woman at a well. She came for water… but Jesus offered her something even better—something that helps your heart feel full and loved.” Curiosity Activity – “Thirsty or Full?” (Quick Sorting Game)

Leader Instruction

This simple game helps kids name “heart thirst” in a safe way and prepares them to understand why Jesus’ living water matters. Step-by-Step: Have kids stay in the circle.

Hold up two signs (or just use your hands):

One hand on your stomach = “Thirsty”

Both hands over heart = “Full”

Say: “I’m going to name a feeling or situation. If it sounds like it makes your heart feel thirsty (empty, needing something), touch your stomach. If it makes your heart feel full (loved, safe), put hands over your heart.”

Read a few: “Someone includes you at recess.”

“Someone laughs at you.”

“A grown-up listens to you.”

“You feel left out.”

“Someone forgives you.”

“You’re worried and don’t know what to do.”

After each, say: “Thank you for showing me. Jesus cares about our hearts.” Close with: “Today Jesus offers living water—God’s love that helps thirsty hearts.” Leader Tips for Management Keep the pace moving—no long stories needed.

No answers are wrong; kids feel things differently.

If a child gets emotional, respond gently: “Thank you for sharing. You’re safe here.”

Transition (Leader Script)

“Now let’s listen to what happened at the well—and what Jesus said about living water.”

Belief – Hear God's Word

Leader Instruction

This is the heart of today’s lesson. The goal is not to focus on every detail of the woman’s life, but to help children experience Jesus’ kindness and the good news of His invitation. In this story, children learn: Jesus speaks kindly to people others avoid.

Jesus offers living water—life with God that satisfies our hearts.

Jesus is the Savior for everyone.

Teaching Goals: Help children understand the setting: a well, a thirsty day, an unexpected conversation.

Help them grasp “living water” in child-friendly language.

Lead them to the Wonder Truth: Jesus offers living water—He satisfies our hearts with God’s love.

Tips for Volunteers: Invite kids into a close circle.

Hold the Bible open to show this comes from God’s Word.

Use gentle wonder language: “I wonder how she felt…”

Keep the woman’s history simple: “Her life was complicated, and Jesus still loved her.”

Emphasize Jesus’ welcome: “Jesus sees you and speaks kindly.”

Prayer of Invitation (Leader Script): (Have children sit quietly.) “Jesus, thank You for meeting people with kindness. Help us listen closely today and understand Your love. Amen.” Bible Time Rhyme (with motions): Say together: “Open God’s Word (open hands like a book), Fresh and true (wiggle fingers like water), Jesus gives life for me and you!” (point to self, then circle) Repeat once more if attention allows. Storytelling (Leader Script) (Have children seated. Hold Bible open. Use a cup and water as a prop.) Jesus Stops at a Well “Jesus was traveling, and He got tired.” “He sat down by a well—Jacob’s well.” (Show the cup.) “A well is where people go to get water.”

Pause: “When do you feel thirsty?” A Woman Comes for Water “A woman came to the well to get water.” “Many people would have ignored her… but Jesus didn’t.” “Jesus spoke to her kindly.”

Jesus Asks for a Drink “Jesus said, ‘Will you give me a drink?’” (Act surprised.) “The woman was surprised because Jews and Samaritans usually didn’t talk like friends.”

Ask: “How do you feel when someone is kind to you?”

Jesus Offers Living Water “Jesus said He could give her living water.” “That doesn’t mean magic water in a cup.” (Shake head gently.) “Living water means Jesus gives life with God—love and joy that lasts inside your heart.”

(Pour a tiny bit of water into the cup.) “Water helps your body.” “But Jesus helps your heart.” Jesus Says God Wants True Worship “Jesus taught her that God wants us to worship Him with our whole hearts.” “That means loving God and trusting Him—wherever we are.”

The Woman Runs to Tell Others “The woman was so amazed, she ran back to her town.” “She told people about Jesus.” “And many people came to see Jesus—and they believed.”

Close Bible gently: “Jesus met her with kindness. Jesus offered living water. Jesus changed her life.” Engagement Prompts Use 2–4: “How did Jesus treat the woman?”

“Why was she surprised Jesus talked to her?”

“What do you think ‘living water’ means for our hearts?”

“Who did the woman tell about Jesus?” For older kids:

“What does this story teach us about who Jesus welcomes?”

Connecting the Wonder Truth (Leader Script) “Jesus shows us something very important today.” Say together slowly: “Jesus offers living water—He satisfies our hearts with God’s love.” Repeat 2–3 times with motions: Living water: wiggle fingers like flowing water

Satisfies: hands over heart

God’s love: hug yourself

Explain simply: “When we feel thirsty inside—lonely, worried, left out—Jesus meets us and fills our hearts with His love.” Word of Wonder (Memory Verse) “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” — John 4:13–14 Motions: Drinks: pretend to sip

Thirsty again: wipe forehead like “whew”

Water I give: hands open like offering

Never thirst: shake head “no” with a smile and hands over heart

Practice: Whisper

Normal voice

Joyful voice

Optional: Pass the cup (empty) or a blue paper “drop.” Each child says one phrase.

Faith – Practice the truth

Leader Instruction

This section helps children move from hearing the story to living it. The goal is not to pressure kids into “perfect faith,” but to help them notice where their hearts feel thirsty and remember Jesus’ promise: He gives living water. Children need to see: It’s okay to need help.

Jesus is kind and safe to talk to.

Jesus’ love fills us and then flows out to others.

Tips for Volunteers: Invite quiet kids gently: “Would you like to share, or would you like to pass?”

Manage dominant voices: “Let’s hear from someone new.”

Keep examples kid-level: friends, recess, family, school worries.

Affirm every response: “That’s real.” “Thank you for sharing.”

K–2: simple questions; 3–5: “why” and “how” questions.

Discussion (Leader Script)

(Keep kids seated in a circle.) Younger (K–2) “Where did Jesus meet the woman?” (At a well.) “What did Jesus offer her?” (Living water.) “Is living water only for our mouths?” (No—our hearts!) “When do your feelings feel ‘thirsty’?” Prompts: “When you’re sad? lonely? left out?” “What can you do when your heart feels thirsty?” Guide: “Pray. Ask Jesus for help. Tell a grown-up.” Say warmly: “Jesus loves helping thirsty hearts.” Older (3–5) “Why do you think Jesus talked to someone other people avoided?” (Guide: Jesus loves everyone; no one is too far.) “What do you think Jesus meant by living water?” (Guide: life with God; love/joy/peace that lasts.) “What are some things people try to use to feel ‘full’ but don’t last?” Keep safe and simple: attention, popularity, more stuff, being ‘cool.’ “What changes when we remember Jesus satisfies our hearts?” (Guide: we can trust Him; we can be kinder; we can share hope.) Affirm: “That’s thoughtful.” “That’s honest.” Faith Practice Moment – “Living Water Prayer” Leader Script: “Let’s practice coming to Jesus like the woman did.” Have kids put one hand over their heart. Say, repeat-after-me: “Jesus,” “when my heart feels thirsty,” “fill me with Your love,” “give me Your living water,” “and help me share kindness.” “Amen.” Optional quick action: “Now, smile at someone and quietly say: ‘Jesus loves you.’”

Transition (Leader Script)

“Jesus fills our hearts with His love—and that love helps us live as people who welcome others too.”

Identity – Activity and response

Craft Activity – Heart of Light Supplies: Blue paper “water drops” (pre-cut) or sticky notes; crayons/markers; tape (optional for display)

Leader Instruction

This activity helps children remember who they are because of Jesus. They are not ignored. They are seen. They are loved. Jesus gives them living water—His love—and that love can “flow” through them to others. This is not about earning Jesus’ love. It is about receiving it. Younger Kids (K–2): Draw a picture on a water drop of something that makes them feel loved by God (church, family, cross, Jesus, hearts).

Adults may write their words as they explain.

Older Kids (3–5): Write two short phrases on separate drops: “Jesus fills my heart when I feel ______.”

“I can share living water by ______.” (kindness, including someone, helping, praying)

Classroom Management Tips: Set time: “We have about 5 minutes.”

Walk around and ask:

“What did you put on your drop?”

“Who could you show kindness to this week?”

Keep it calm and encouraging.

Instructions: Give each child 1–2 water drops.

Say: “Jesus offers living water. That means His love can fill your heart.”

Invite them to draw/write their responses.

Invite 1–2 kids to share.

Tape drops onto a poster or wall titled: “Living Water: Jesus Fills Us!”

Leader Script (Identity Connection) “Look at all these drops.” “Each one is a reminder: Jesus sees you, Jesus welcomes you, and Jesus fills your heart.” “When Jesus fills us, His love can flow out—so we can be kind and welcoming too.”

Closing – Send them with the truth

Leader Instruction

Bring children into a close circle. Lower your voice slightly. End with warmth and calm—this story is gentle and hopeful. Choose a calm signal: Clap-and-echo pattern, or

“Hands on your knees, eyes on me.”

Review Wonder Truth (Leader Script): “Before we go, let’s remember today’s Wonder Truth.” All together: “Jesus offers living water—He satisfies our hearts with God’s love.” Repeat with variation: Whisper voice

Strong, joyful voice

Add motion: Flowing water fingers

Hands over heart

Memory Verse Review (with motions): John 4:13–14 (shortened) “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” Motions: Sip

Offer hands

Hands over heart “never thirst”

Blessing (Leader Script): (Look around the circle gently.) “May Jesus fill your heart with His love. May you remember you are seen and welcomed by Him. And may His living water flow through you as kindness to others this week. Amen.”

Closing Prayer (repeat-after-me)

“Dear Jesus,” “Thank You for loving me.” “Fill my heart with Your living water.” “Help me share kindness.” “Amen.” Final Leader Encouragement “I’m so glad you were here today. Jesus sees you and loves you.”
